Short description: The objective of the Botany I course is introduction to plant anatomy, structures classification and general understanding of the anatomy and morphology of vascular plants. Special attention is paid to the main levels of plant structure (cell, tissues and functional plant organs). Special attention is paid to the plant reproduction process.
Full description: Introduction to plant anatomy and morphology, methods of plant structures classification. Cytology, detailed characteristic of the cell structure incl. cell wall structure. Structure and functions of tissue systems in plant: protective, strengthening, storage and transporting. Primary and secondary tissues, meristems. Anatomy of primary and secondary structure of plant vegetative organs. Primary and secondary growth of roots and stems. Anatomy and morphology of plant organs: root, stem, leaf. Mechanisms of plant reproduction, anatomy of plant embryo and flower.

Learning outcomes: Knowledge Knows the anatomy and morphology of plants; understand the functions of the various organs. The student recognize the relationships between structure and function in plant cells, tissues and organs. Understand connections between plant anatomy and the other disciplines of botany (taxonomy and ecology). Skills Student is able to use a microscope as a basic research tool. Is able to prepare the microscopic preparations made for the exercises, and interpret them. Social competences It is aware of the need for continuing further education. Understands the need to work in interdisciplinary teams.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: e.g. grade obtained at classes (60%) + grade obtained at lectures (40%)
